What is your favourite memory of filming Hellraiser: Bloodline and do you have any funny stories about filming the movie on-set?

The transformation from the paisan girl to Angelique. The five-hour make up was hilarious! I remember that Pinhead wanted to take the nails off his face so that he could kiss Angelique – but that didn’t work out!

he original director’s cut of Hellraiser: Bloodline is considered lost, but early accounts suggest it began in the 1700s and gave Angelique a much more significant role. Did you ever get to see that version, or based on what you filmed, can you describe what might have been for Angelique in the full cut?

In the 1700 century takes, Angelique was a Princess. That final cut was edited in a different way, I had the chance to see it; it was phenomenal! Unfortunately they edited and took out the scenes where Angelique had a much more significant role.

There are hints of a romantic and seductive connection between Angelique and each generation of the LeMarchand family. Was Angelique the reason LeMarchand’s partner – the expectant mother – left him, or was there less of a romantic subtext in the earlier timeline?

Angelique was always a seductive character and all men succumbed to her sexuality, so LeMarchand was totally lost in love for Angelique, for generations. But in every generation he had to be remembered.

Angelique is repeatedly referred to as a “Princess” and clearly predates Pinhead. Were you given any background or direction about her royal status or origin? And since Pinhead later says Hell has become “more ordered,” how do you imagine Hell might have been during Angelique’s reign?

Angelique is an ancient sorceress with dark and powerful powers of magic and had the power previous to pinhead, but in her reign the chaos was in perfect order. Everyone obeyed her – She was the Princess of hell.

Angelique’s approach to her victims is very different from Pinhead’s – she tempts with pleasure while he enforces pain. Do you think Angelique’s banishment or removal from Hell might have influenced how the Cenobites evolved after her time?

As a Cenobite, she seduced men before killing them and that was her pleasure in the playing-ground before the blood starts. Angelique was half-human, half-demon. Like a falling angel… So, some small part in her was good

LeMarchand nearly succeeded in creating infinite light, potentially banishing Pinhead to the edges of experience. If that had worked, how do you imagine Angelique would have reshaped Hell, the Cenobites, and perhaps even the future of the Hellraiser universe?

As Angelique was not absolutely a demon, and had half-human blood, I imagine that being the Princess of Hell would have had the power to bring subjects to her and select them to accomplish her intimate pleasures.

Bloodline spans the 1700s, the 1900s, and a distant future. If we consider only the first four Hellraiser films as canon, what do you think the Cenobites, including Angelique; might have experienced in Leviathan’s realm between 1996 and 2100?

Each time Cenobites became stronger and they evolved through centuries. The Leviathan’s Hell between 1996 and 2100 has continued to find humans to become Cenobites all over the world. We can see them everyday – we all suffer the Leviathan’s call.

Do you consider Angelique a Cenobite? When she first arrives on Earth, the Lament Configuration hasn’t yet been created, and she’s summoned through magic rather than the box. Did you ever think about how Angelique might bend or break Hell’s rules to free herself from her human captors?

Angelique is not initially a Cenobite. After summoning the paisan girl through magic, Leviathan’s power couldn’t deal with her powerful sorcery and the ancestor of the Bloodline. Once she transforms into a Cenobite, she adopts typical Cenobite traits, But her origins are tied to magic and ancient hellish powers. That was the way she could bend/break Hell’s rules.

In the 1990s segment, there are intimate moments between Angelique and the modern LeMarchand. Do you view those scenes as Angelique using manipulation to invade his mind, or simply as a human man being drawn to a woman with overwhelming allure?

Both – manipulation to invade his mind and being drawn to a woman with overwhelming allures.

When Angelique is first summoned, her spirit is placed into the skin of a local girl tempted by the luxuries of the de L’Isle household. Later, in her Cenobite form, her skin appears similarly shaped but corrupted. How do you imagine Angelique as the “Princess of Hell” – would she have been unaltered and pure, or already marked by Leviathan’s corruption?

Angelique was subordinate to Leviathan’s power. I think that the Princess of Hell has differences marked by her condition as a Cenobite, but she also has nuances of pureness.

In some of the workprint footage, Angelique is shown as the one who commissions the creation of the puzzle box, rather than the box existing before her summoning, as seen in the theatrical cut. If Angelique was already in the human world before the box’s completion, do you know whether she was acting under Leviathan’s orders to bring the boxes into existence – or was it her own way of trying to seize control over the gateway between Hell and the human world?

The theatrical cut leaves much of this ambiguous. The movie suggests she may have had her own motives, possibly working under Leviathan’s guidance but also driven by personal ambition to gain the power. This duality makes Angelique a complex character because of her human, demon, and fallen angel qualities.

What happened with all the prosthetic pieces and costume garb that comprised Angelique? Do you still have any items personally, or are there any pieces you wish you could have kept?

Gary J. Tunnicliffe created the full costume character of Angelique. The movie’s production kept all prosthetic pieces and costuming of Angelique. I could have kept Angelique’s open head for getting better ideas! laughs.

What’s the most memorable fan encounter you’ve had related to Hellraiser?

At one of the conventions, Days of the Dead, many fans tattooed their arms with Angelique’s character and that makes me very proud.

Have you ever seen a cosplay or fan-art of Angelique that blew you away?

Absolutely! Many of them.

Angelique is in a boxing-ring with all the other Cenobites, which ones does she defeat and are there any they would struggle against or lose to?

No. There is no Cenobite that can harm Angelique. Her ambition is to defeat Pinhead to gain the ‘total’ power.

Have you yourself seen all eleven Hellraiser movies – If not, which ones have you not seen or actively avoided?

I’ve seen all of them, but my favorite is Bloodline.
